Your IT partner should do more than keep your systems running. They should help protect your intellectual property and client data, give your team the tools to work effectively, and ensure your business is ready for its next stage of growth. For independent media agency Kaimera, that partnership helped turn IT from a founder-led responsibility into a business enabler.
When you're growing a business, technology can either support your ambitions or hold them back. As your team expands and client expectations increase, so does the need for reliable systems, strong cybersecurity and the right expertise behind the scenes.
For Kaimera, now part of Havas Media Network, partnering with Com-X helped establish the IT foundations to support its growth from 16 to 53 people across Sydney and Melbourne.
As co-founder and Chief Digital and Product Officer Trent McMillan explains in our latest Com-X Connects video interview, the difference he experienced that went well beyond technical support.
Freeing up leadership to focus on growth
In the early days, IT responsibilities fell to Trent, from setting up laptops and managing email to troubleshooting technical issues.
"I was too busy stuck in the weeds and actually doing the work that I needed to be doing," he says.
Having Com-X as a dedicated IT partner gave Kaimera's team direct access to support, freeing Trent to focus on clients and business strategy rather than day-to-day technology problems.
As the agency grew, Com-X also helped establish greater consistency across its IT environment, including software updates, security and employee education.
"The team are all levelled up. They understand what they're doing, where their gaps might be, and who to actually engage when they have questions," Trent explains.
For a growing business, that consistency matters. Employees can focus on delivering work, while leadership has greater confidence that the technology supporting the business is being managed appropriately.
Protecting client data can open doors to bigger opportunities
For media agencies, cybersecurity isn't just about protecting systems. It's about safeguarding sensitive client information, intellectual property and the trust that underpins commercial relationships.
It can also influence which opportunities a business is equipped to pursue.
Trent points to Kaimera's experience responding to a tender involving Mastercard. The security and technology questions presented a challenge for a growing independent agency without a dedicated internal IT team.
With Com-X's expertise, Kaimera could draw on specialist support to address those requirements and participate in a process that may otherwise have been difficult to navigate.
"The questions they asked I wouldn't have been able to answer or actually understand what they were asking of me as an agency," he says. "Being able to lean on the team of Com-X allowed us to actually respond, not only in a timely manner, but actually answer all the questions efficiently, effectively, and allowed us to actually become part of their tender process."
For Trent, having a trusted partner monitoring the environment and helping protect client data also brought greater peace of mind.
The lesson for business leaders is clear: protecting your business, your intellectual property and your customers' data is essential, but having the expertise to demonstrate that protection can also help you compete for new business.
Building a business that's ready for what's next
The value of the partnership became even clearer when Kaimera entered due diligence, ahead of its acquisition by Havas Media Network.
Having appropriate systems, documentation and reporting already in place helped the agency demonstrate how its IT environment was managed and monitored.
"Having you guys in there from day one, ensuring that everything was up-to-date, relevant, kept in good nick was quite important," Trent says.
He highlights the value of having a documented history of monthly reporting and monitoring throughout the relationship.
"Having that visibility gave Havas the confidence that they were buying into an agency which had everything in-house ready to go and we're actually nice and tidy."
For businesses planning to expand, pursue larger contracts or prepare for acquisition, this is an important consideration. Technology management and security shouldn't be addressed only when a client, auditor or potential buyer asks questions. They need to be part of how the business operates every day.
As Trent puts it, having the right infrastructure and partners in place is crucial when preparing for sale, partnering with another business or simply growing to the next level.

A partner who understands your business
Kaimera's experience demonstrates why choosing an IT partner should be a business decision, not simply a search for technical support. Com-X brought experience working with other media agencies, an understanding of specialist platforms and the ability to support Kaimera as its needs evolved. That foundation also creates a starting point for future conversations about AI adoption, data protection and compliance.
"Actually, being able to trust that you have experience with those very technical and different platforms that we leverage, you understand what we're actually doing for our customers and clients is quite critical,” he explains. " Being able to lean in as a partner and go beyond just the services you provide and figure out how we could grow together is equally important.”
The right IT partner understands what makes your business successful, what you need to protect and where you want to go next.
At Com-X, we work alongside businesses to manage and secure their technology, protect their operations and help ensure their IT environment supports their commercial ambitions.
Whether you're scaling your team, pursuing larger clients or preparing for your next stage of growth, the right IT and cybersecurity partnership can help you move forward with confidence.
